A SIMPLE ACT TO MAKE LIFE BETTER

Why do we forget to do the most simple thing in the world?

calm, anxiety, focus, healthy

Maybe you think you already do it.  You’re alive, right?

Maybe you think it’s a bunch of woo-woo nonsense.

Maybe you’ve tried but you can’t make it stick.

The Reality?

Most (and when I say most, I mean virtually all) adults in Western culture breath using only the uppermost parts of their lungs and rarely breathe fully.

We also tend to hold our breath when we concentrate, strain or feel stressed.  (The reason your trainer at the gym has to remind you to breathe every 30 seconds.)

Deep, full breathing creates instant physiological changes in your body (lowers heart rate, lowers blood pressure, stops cortisol production, etc…) that make you feel better, calmer and more focused.

Try This…

For one week, set an alarm on your phone to go off once every waking hour. (Please don’t interrupt your sleep.)

Each time the alarm goes off, stop what you’re doing allow you’re eyes to fall into soft focus and take 10 deep breaths beginning with an exhale. (If you were concentrating, you were probably holding your breath.)

  • Exhale fully, until absolutely no air is coming out.

  • Inhale slowly into your belly until you’ve filled your belly like a balloon.

  • Repeat 9 more times noticing the way your body expands, lengthens, straightens on the inhale and melts into a natural resting state on the exhale.

If your alarm goes off and you’re in the middle of a conversation?  No worries.  Just take one deep breath each time you’re not speaking. Pay close attention to the changes you feel immediately after each little session and overall as the week continues.

I've been guiding people through life's toughest transitions—like career shifts, evolving relationships, retirement, grief, and loss—long before 'life coaching' became a household term.
