SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES
Setting boundaries on the way your kids (and anyone else) speaks to you is a critical component of healthy relationships and your own self-worth.
boundaries, relationships, parenting, confidence, self worth
This technique was developed by friend and colleague Susan Epstein to help parents eliminate backtalk from their kids quickly and easily.
Her method is simple.
When faced with backtalk, calmly say “please don’t speak to me that way, it’s disrespectful.”
When that is met with an eyroll, calmly say “please don’t speak to me that way, it too is disrespectful.”
When that is met with hands on hips, calmly say “please don’t speak to me that way, it’s disrespectful.”
Here’s the thing…
This doesn’t only work on kids.
When you’re in a difficult conversation with an adult and things get heated or nasty, rather than getting drawn in, you can often change the dialog with something like “I hear how upset you are, but please don’t speak to me that way.”
And when the person persists…“I hear how upset you are, but please don’t speak to me that way.”
And so on.
Give it a try, it works!
